Farewell to a Friend

Chally on slate, about 5×8″.  It’s been a hard week for my friend Stayner, who lost his life partner on September 3.  His life partner being, of course, his horse, LGM Challenger.  Stayner is an avid rider and an AHA judge.  A dark chestnut Morgan, “Chally” made his mark in the eventing world, holding his own and often winning against much larger thoroughbreds and warmbloods. Chally was formally retired in 2011 at age 27 after completing the last two of his 110 Horse Trials. Stayner was 73, so the combined ages of these two legendary figures totaled 100 yrs! Godspeed Chally — thanks for all you did for our breed.

About Nancy J. Bailey

Artist, author, bad karaoke singer. Woodsy ragamuffin. Mom of a horse named Clifford who plays fetch and paints with watercolors. He visits libraries and schools with me, to promote literacy and making the world a better place. Yes, he is house trained, no, he doesn't live in my house! I have written three books about Clifford. But my newest book, THE NORTH SIDE OF DOWN, is co-written by my awesome sister Amanda, who has Down syndrome. Her unexpected one-liner wisecracks can always make me laugh. If you make me laugh, you've made my day!

Nancy, Thank you for the beautiful tribute & the more than beautiful slate depicting Chally’s great enthusiasm & jumping style. Though the sadness remains, this will remind me to be thankful for the wonderful journey we had! I’m so glad we obtained the winsome photo of Clifford & Chally which was so aptly described by Beth Benard of Canequin Morgans as “Two Legends Sniffing Noses”!!

    Gratefully,
    Stayner
